Our Position on the Current Condition of Ethiopia, Gonder!

We condemn an ‘Act of Terrorism’ Committed by TPLF lead Ethiopian government!

We members of The Ethiopian Communities Council in Australia are outraged, appalled, and anguished by the TPLF recent declaration of war and an act of terrorism perpetrated against the Amhara people in Gonder. The Agazi special TPLF killing squad, armed to its teeth have been killing, torturing, imprisoning, and dislocating the Amhara people and the rest of Ethiopians from their natural dwellings for the last 25 years. The Amhara and other Ethiopians have to do everything to stop this rapacious regime to live in peace, security and prosperity.Protests also spread to Debark and Sanja in Gondar.
We are torn by this great tragedy and join the world wide protest to express our outrage and condemnation of this ferocious act driven by enmity against the Amhara people and their struggle for freedom and justice. We find it very disturbing that before any investigation of these crimes, the TPLF government continues to use vindictive rhetoric of discord and distrust directly on the Amhara especially on the Wolkayit-Tsegede-Humera-Tselemit who defend their Amhara root and their natural habituations.
Historically, Wolkayit-Tsegede & Humera-Tselemit were distinct regions of Northern Gonder since ancient times, in which it was annexed by force into Tigray in 1991 in the form of subjugation. In all historical books, in all ancient maps, in tradition, culture and language, their psychological make up and norms of these people were never been part of Tigray. They were always part and parcel of the Dembeya together with quara, janamora, semen and the rest form North Gonder ethnically identified as Amhara.
During TPLF armed insurgency the group used the above mentioned subjugated areas for military strategy to make a corridor with its host the Sudan. It subdued the people and other resistance movements in the area in its military might. So this TPLF might become a right now after it toppled the military government in grabbing the land and displace the people in the area and start to relocate and settle its own ethic groups Tigrian’s. Although the people in these areas had contributed significantly to topple the military government, sadly TPLF had managed to settle more than three hundred thousands of Tigre farmers in its first stage, and continued settling in these fertile lands of Wolkayit-Tsegede, Humera and Tselemit, and associated areas by replacing the native with the new comers from Tigre and consequently changed the demographic nature of the land.
Following this event, the natives had exerted many efforts to lodge their complaints and objection their demographic change and requesting their national identity to be respected as an Amhara. For that effort the people in the area had set up an 88 committee members and send them to Addis Ababa more than eleven times. Nevertheless, some months ago they were bared to enter the city 35 km away for several days. Subsequently, the government started to fan through its media outlets and characterized the legitimate committee setup as terrorist or has connection with terrorism.
The Ethiopian government spokesperson Getachew Reda accused the committee members of kidnapping, murder and being in possession of arms with an intent of staging terrorist attacks. He also rejected any notion that the clashes was being spearheaded by the Amhara community. Despite Ethiopian human right committee grim report publicizing that in 34 people were murdered 93 were abducted and many has been dislocated from their usual domicile the area by the government and its affiliated clusters.(http://ahrethio.org/wpcontent/ uploads/2016/07/HRCO-141st-Special-Report-English.pdf)
The repressive regime in Addis Ababa has not only condemned the committee (Amhara’s) as guilty as usually it does to other Ethiopians, such as the Oromo’s the Gambelia’s etc. who had peacefully protested for their rights. It is now asserting that Wolkayit-Tsegede, Humera and Tselemit Amhara’s have been collaborating with terrorism and labelled them as “terrorists” trained by its untrustworthy enemy and infiltrated from Eretria. It is clear that the regime in Ethiopia is trying to cripple the peaceful legitimate protest of these Amhara’s for their rights. This is a protest that has now peacefully gone on for more than thirty four years and is opposed to the regime’s gross and illegal mutilation and merge the Wolkayit community and its land into the neighbouring Tigray Regional State. The alleged Wolkayit committee arrest of such elements is expected to buttress the regime’s allegation to discredit
the popular and spreading struggle of the Wolkayit committee for their legitimate rights.
Finally, we demand the government authorities who are perpetrators of this heinous crime and those who gave an order of this nature and cause a loss of life expeditiously as possible so that responsible be brought to justice.

Obama’s Ethiopia in Tatters and in Danger of Civil War

Washington is a key ally and number one supporter of the minority regime ruling Ethiopia with brute force.
Following the death of the late dictator Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, the Obama administration was intent on ensuring continuity by giving full support to Hailemariam Desalegn. On April 24, 2012, President Barack Obama called Desalegn personally to advertise his unequivocal support, to assure world leaders that Washington is confident and to ward-off internal challenges.Obama Urges Ethiopia to Curb Crackdowns on Media, Opposition
Meles Zenawi was the perfect agent that funneled their agendas. His death was personal for US officials as he was close confidant and faithful agent. A New York Times op-ed described Susan Rice’s eulogy at Zenawi’s funeral as follows,
“ON Sept. 2, Ambassador Susan E. Rice delivered a eulogy for a man she called “a true friend to me.” Before thousands of mourners and more than 20 African heads of state in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Ms. Rice, the United States’ representative to the United Nations, lauded the country’s late prime minister, Meles Zenawi, She called him “brilliant” — “a son of Ethiopia and a father to its rebirth.”
The opinion further articulates,
“Few eulogies give a nuanced account of the decedent’s life, but the speech was part of a disturbing pattern for an official who could become President Obama’s next secretary of state. During her career, she has shown a surprising and unsettling sympathy for Africa’s despots.’’
The New York Times is being kind to Rice. Susan Rice’s hand is soaked with blood in Rwanda, Eritrea Ethiopia war and Libya to mention some.
Certain that Susan Rice cannot pass congressional scrutiny to succeed Secretary Hilary Clinton as Secretary of State, President Obama appointed Rice to his National Security team and gave her prominence and unhindered access.
Due to her past engagement with Africa, Rice can act as expert and influence African matters particularly Ethiopia based on her narrow outlook that has been deadly to Africa for decades.
The Obama administration was and remains the number one supporter of a regime that claimed to have won 100% of votes and won the 2015 election. The people of Ethiopia were enraged when Susan Rice laughed at Ethiopia’s regime 100% election victory claim and called it democratic.
This clearly demonstrates that Washington policy for the region has been directed through the prism of the Ethiopian regime at the expense the people.
The problem is that the Ethiopian regime worked against the interest of the people of Ethiopia and the region. As a result, the people of Ethiopia have been campaigning and lobbying Washington to change approach, denounce the atrocities, urge the regime to be accountable to the people and hold the regime accountable for its actions to no avail. Instead, Washington kept parroting the regime’s false claims of progress, stability and democratic advances to the detriment of the future of Ethiopia and the region.
Ethiopia in Tatters and in Danger of Civil War
Where is Ethiopia today?  Ethiopia is on a verge of civil war and ready to collapse. And the template for the breakup of the country was set by Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF). When TPLF took power in 1991, the first major objective was to write a constitution that divided Ethiopia based on ethnicity. The constitution, Article 39, goes further to give rights to any of the ethnic groups the right to Self-Determination to the point of independence.
The complications arose when the minority regime from Tigray (region that represent 6% of the entire Ethiopian population) asserted control over the rest of Ethiopia’s 90 million people for it created unsustainable imbalance to the detriment of the future of the country.
The Tigrayan dominated minority regime controls the military, the economy, the political power backed with full diplomatic support from the US and EU. The US and EU promote and protect the regime from international scrutiny for its human rights abuses.
The TPLF and its surrogates are the number one investors inside Ethiopia. Ill-gotten aid money, Ethiopia’s revenue streams and international development assistance are diverted to benefit the regime and use the moneys and resources to control the nation. Few from the clique control the vast riches of the country and the regime has investments in Oromia, Gambela, Ogaden, Afar, Amhara and all over Ethiopia.
They control Ethiopia with brutality that is uncharacteristic of the cultures in the region. They have committed genocides in Gambela, Ogaden, Amhara, Benishangul and other places. They are committing atrocities with impunity while Washington officials and EU were being made aware every step of the way. Ethiopians have been campaigning to draw attention with demonstrations and other campaigns for over 20 years.
Hence, and after 25 years of oppression the people of Ethiopia came to the conclusion that the regime is not in any way representative of the people and, concluded that the regime is the enemy of the people. They also concluded that there is no nation that will come to their aid.
After successive rigged elections, after countless peaceful demonstrations that were met with brute force with the regime’s forces directly shooting at innocent unarmed demonstrators, after thousands of decenters and opposition leaders got jailed and no one stood for them; they gave up on the international community. As a result Ethiopians are taking up arms everywhere to defend their lives and livelihood.
Furthermore, the federal arrangement that the minority regime created based on ethnicity has become the fault-line for the breakup of the nation. Today every ethnic group is fighting the TPLF regime separately. They are fighting for their rights, fighting for land the TPLF forcefully took, fighting for their identity and some are fighting for independence. Above all they are fighting for their life.
There are several groups fighting the regime. While Ginbot7 is fighting without ethnic banner for united approach; The Oromo Liberation Front (OLF), Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF), the Afar People’s Liberation Movement (APLM) and the Tigray People’s Democratic Movement (TPDM) are fighting separately to defeat the regime. That means absent of a united approach Ethiopia can and will implode.
The last five months the Oromia region was in revolt and over the last three weeks the people of Gondar in the Amhara region started to resist. These are locals arming and organizing as militias to protect themselves from the regime’s brute forces.
Up until now the minority regime’s stronghold Tigray region was untouched as the revolts were further from its boundaries. The revolt in Gondar brings totally different dimension to the overall resistance taking place all over Ethiopia.
Tigray is bordered by Eritrea in the North, (a country at war with the minority regime) Amhara in the South and Afar in the East and Sudan in the West. In other words Tigray is surrounded by regions that the TPLF oppressed and regions that are fighting with the TPLF because TPLF took their fertile lands and forcefully changed the maps of the regions and forced the people to live as Tigrayans.  The people of Tigray enjoyed free access to Eritrea’s ports until the TPLF ignited war, occupied sovereign Eritrean territories, declared No War No Peace asymmetric warfare, and waged regime change campaign.
As a result the people of Tigray are completely isolated and surrounded. All goods that Tigray imports must pass through Amhara, Afar regions, Sudan or Eritrea. All these areas are hostile to the regime except Sudan. Gondar is a lifeline that the people of Tigray count-on because Tigray is connected to Ethiopia via Gondar.
This is what Genocide Watch, an organization based in Washington DC has been warning.  Dr. Gregory Stanton of Genocide Watch has been warning the international community by writing letters to the State Department, waging campaigns to educate people and placed Ethiopia in Stage 6 which is countries that are second-highest level for risk of genocide.
He is concerned for the people of Tigray because the minority regime is looting Ethiopia in the name of Tigray. He is afraid that Ethiopia can resent Tigrayans and the backlash could become deadly. The longer the regime stays in power the worse the situations all across Ethiopia will become and it will be hard for Ethiopia to stand as one.
These are the realities in Ethiopia today. The Obama Administration with Susan Rice as a gatekeeper of African affairs is incapable to come up with coherent approach that can place Ethiopia in particular and the region as a whole on a positive direction. Instead, Washington is still pushing its outdated agendas to the detriment of Ethiopia and the region. Many have been urging this administration to change its direction to no avail. The stumbling block is Susan Rice.
Conclusion
All will not be lost if the Obama Administration wakes up and addresses the concern of the people of Ethiopia and the region and change direction completely by siding with the people and the rule of law. This requires a complete reversal of approach and strategy. It requires giving peace, stability and the future of the people a chance and priority. It requires rejecting the regime and fighting to give Ethiopians opportunity to create a legitimate government in exile. This could only be achieved in consultation and cooperation with Eritrea. That means Washington must change its approach with Eritrea as well. The window of opportunity is very limited. Therefore, let us hope better senses prevail to save Ethiopia.  And also, lest not forget that the upcoming US presidential election could be decided in Virginia where sizeable Ethiopian population resides that could help determine the outcome.

Ethiopian regime refuses to let a critically ill opposition political figure travel abroad for treatment

The Ethiopian regime has prevented Habtamu Ayalew, a leading member of the banned Unity for Democracy and Justice a.k.a Andinet, from travelling abroad for treatment.Habtamu in a hospital bed in Addis Ababa.
Habtamu is in a hospital bed in Addis Ababa. His doctors described his condition as critical. Diagnosis and treatment in his case is not available in the country and doctors had recommended he be sent abroad.
The tyrannical minority regime in Ethiopia that see figures like Habtamu as a threat to its iron fist rule has refused to allow him to travel abroad.
Ethiopians have for the last two days been campaigning in the social media asking the United States Embassy in Addis Ababa use its leverages to intervene in the matter so that the regime would allow Habtamu seek treatment abroad.
Habtamu was released from prison last year after serving 18 months on bogus terrorism charges. Beaten, tortured and abused, his health has not been the same since he had left the regime’s notorious prison.

Exclusive: How text message sparked frantic search for British death-row prisoner in Ethiopia

(I NEWS)— The Government was forced to launch a frantic search for a British citizen being held on death row in Ethiopia after he was transferred from solitary confinement to a notorious federal prison without their knowledge, according to internal Foreign Office documents seen by i News.UK “stands shoulder to shoulder” with Ethiopia
Diplomats concerned for the welfare of Andy Tsege, a father of three from London who was kidnapped and rendered to Ethiopia in 2014, were informed of the development in an offhand text message from the country’s Foreign Minister, which simply read: “the guy is transferred”.
Campaigners working for the release of Mr Tsege, 61, said the incident showed how the Ethiopians had been able to “run rings” around British officials and proved that the FCO’s softly-softly approach to diplomacy was not working.

Outspoken critic

Mr Tsege, who sought asylum in Britain in 1979 and has been an outspoken critic of the Ethiopian government, was sentenced to death in absentia in 2009 following a mass trial.
Two years ago, on 23 June 2014, he was intercepted at an airport in Yemen and rendered to Ethiopia, where he has been held ever since.
The documents, which were obtained by the human rights charity Reprieve and include emails and FCO case notes relating to Mr Tsege between May and October last year, show how Ethiopian officials repeatedly ignored requests from British diplomats who wanted to visit him in jail and allow him access to medical treatment and a lawyer.
The Ethiopians moved Mr Tsege out of solitary confinement and into a federal prison on 16 July – a development which was only relayed to the FCO through a text message from Foreign Minister Tedros Adhanom.

‘Ethiopia’s gulag’

After a search lasting five days, diplomats were eventually told he was being held in Kality Prison outside Addis Ababa, despite the jail initially denying he was there.
Dubbed “Ethiopia’s gulag”, the jail has infamously tough conditions.
Mr Adhanom told Greg Dorey, the British Ambassador to Ethiopia, that there was no “need” for Mr Tsege to have access to a lawyer as his case had already been concluded.
The diplomat was told there would be no legal appeal process and that Mr Tsege must simply “behave well for some time and show he regretted what he had done” if he wanted to be pardoned.

Intransigence of the Ethiopians

The intransigence of the Ethiopians about the case has clearly taken its toll on relations between the two countries.
A year after Mr Tsege was jailed, Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond warned in a meeting with Mr Adhanom that Ethiopia’s “repeated failure to deliver on our basic requests” had led him to start “looking carefully at the bilateral relationship”.
According to a note of the meeting, Mr Hammond said “people were asking why we had a substantial bilateral relationship but were not able to resolve this”.
Mr Adhanom responded with surprise, claiming that Mr Tsege was being treated “well” and had access to a “laptop and books”.

Legal access

During a visit to Ethiopia at the end of last month, Mr Hammond secured a “commitment” from the Ethiopian government that Mr Tsege would finally be granted access to a lawyer.
An FCO official also visited him in jail and was “satisfied that he is not being ill-treated”.
However, Reprieve pointed out that Ethiopia had failed to honour its previous promises.
“Throughout Andy’s two-year ordeal, Ethiopian officials have repeatedly run rings around the Foreign Office – making and breaking the most basic of assurances, and insisting, again and again, that Andy has no legal rights in Ethiopia,” said Maya Foa, the head of the charity’s death penalty team.
“By relying on the latest empty promise of ‘legal access’, Philip Hammond is only compounding the abuses Andy has suffered in illegal Ethiopian detention.
“Enough is enough – the Foreign Secretary must call for Andy’s release, so he can return to his family in the UK.”
An FCO spokesman said: “We don’t recognise the situation presented, which appears very out of date. Significant progress has been made on the case of Mr Tsege, with ministerial level lobbying achieving regular consular access, regular family visits, a move to a regular federal prison and most recently, agreement to access to a lawyer.”

Prof. Berhanu Nega “The fight with TPLF is in the heartland, not along the border”

Prof. Berhanu Nega in Washington D.C. May 29, 2016
(ESAT News)— Chairman of the Patriotic Ginbot 7 Movement for Unity and Democracy, Prof. Berhanu Nega reiterated that armed operations by his Movement is not along the border with Eritrea as the regime in Addis Ababa would like the people to believe, but is inside the heartland as has been seen in the recent fight with regime forces in Arbaminch, south Ethiopia.
Addressing Ethiopians in North America at a meeting held in Washington DC on Sunday, the Chairman of Patriotic Ginbot 7, an armed coalition fighting the tyrannical regime in Ethiopia said the recent attack against regime forces in Arbaminch has proven the regime’s rhetoric wrong – that the armed group would launch an attack from the country’s border with Eritrea.
An attack by the Patriotic Ginbot 7 forces early this month killed at least 20 regime soldiers while 50 others sustained serious injuries.
Prof. Berhanu meanwhile called on Ethiopians in the diaspora to get organized and stay vigilant so as not to fall into the regime’s trap, which would otherwise destroy the fabric of Ethiopian civic and religious institutions in the diaspora.
He said Ethiopians abroad should work to bring officials of the corrupt regime to justice whenever and wherever they see them. He encouraged Ethiopians abroad to use alternative ways when they send money to their country as remittances are a significant source of foreign currency to the corrupt regime. He also urged Ethiopians to establish democratic institutions wherever they are and strengthen the culture of democracy.
