(ESAT News) – More than 100 prisoners have reportedly escaped from Angereb Jail located in the outskirts of Gondar. Two days ago, more than 500 prisoners escaped from Bahta prison in the same city while some 40 others died after the prison was set on fire.
Eyewitnesses said there was a confrontation between prison guards and family members of prisoners. It escalated when the prisoners who were transferred from Bahta Prison started to protest against the prison conditions. The prison guards then started firing shots to back the visitors off. Gunshots were heard for more than two hours, witnesses from the area told ESAT on the phone

Fodder and grass piled near the prison was also burnt. In the chaotic condition, more than 100 inmates broke the prison and escaped, according to ESAT’s sources. Sources also said some inmates might have been killed during the clash.
Police reportedly transferred the remaining prisoners at Angereb jail to Bahirdar, sourced informed ESAT.
In the last few days, the total number of inmates escaped from two prisons in Gondar could be more than 600. Earlier in the week ESAT reported that at least forty prisoners were killed after a fire broke out at Bahta Ethiopia. About 500 other prisoners have purportedly escaped from this prison while a 100 others sustained burns from the blaze.
